Key takeaways

The TL;DR. 6 headline facts about Decodo (formerly Smartproxy) pulled from our test rig + their public documentation.

  • Decodo (rebranded from Smartproxy in April 2025) runs a 125M+ IP pool spanning residential, mobile, and ISP networks across 195+ countries with state, city, and ASN-level targeting — the same backend infrastructure customers used pre-rebrand, just with a new dashboard skin at dashboard.decodo.com.
  • Entry pricing starts at $3.75/GB on the 3 GB residential plan and scales to $2.00/GB at the 1 TB tier; pay-as-you-go residential is $4/GB with no monthly commitment, undercutting Bright Data's $8.40/GB PAYG and Oxylabs' $8/GB starter rate by roughly half.
  • Decodo publishes a 99.95% success rate on its residential network and backs it with a 14-day money-back guarantee plus a 3-day / 100 MB free trial — short enough to be a real constraint if you're benchmarking against NodeMaven's 2 GB trial, but enough to sanity-check a scraper.
  • The self-serve flow is the actual differentiator: credit card, no KYC, no sales call, no minimum commit — you can go from signup to a working residential IP in roughly 60 seconds, which is structurally impossible at Bright Data or Oxylabs above the entry tier.
  • 2025-26 product velocity is heavy on the AI stack: native MCP server for Claude and ChatGPT agents, n8n nodes, LangChain integration, and the AI Parser that returns structured JSON from raw HTML — features Webshare and IPRoyal haven't shipped.
  • Trust gaps remain honest: no SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 certification yet, Cloudflare-fronted targets see noticeably higher block rates than NodeMaven or the Bright Data Unblocker tier, support is chat-and-ticket only (no dedicated CSM under enterprise), and rebrand-era docs still contain stale Smartproxy URLs in places.

The verdict

Independent nightly benchmarks since March 2024 — here's where Decodo (formerly Smartproxy) lands.

What we like
  • Self-serve credit-card onboarding — no sales call, KYC, or minimum-commitment gating before first request
  • Transparent linear pricing ladder from 3 GB ($3.75/GB) to 1 TB ($2.00/GB) with no hidden floor fees
  • True pay-as-you-go residential at $4/GB — competitive PAYG is rare among major Tier-1 providers
  • 125M+ residential pool across 195+ countries with state, city, and ASN-level targeting
  • Strong dashboard UX, browser extensions for Chrome/Firefox, and a free Proxy Checker tool
  • 14-day money-back guarantee plus 3-day / 100 MB free trial — full refund window after validation
  • Active 2025-26 product velocity: AI Parser, MCP server, n8n and LangChain integrations
Watch outs
  • No published SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001 attestation — regulated procurement teams will hit a wall
  • Cloudflare and Akamai-fronted targets show measurably higher ban rates than the unblocker-heavy premium tier
  • Free trial capped at 100 MB over 3 days — barely enough to validate a single scraper run on a real workload
  • Support tier is chat-and-ticket for most plans; named account managers reserved for upper residential brackets
  • April 2025 Smartproxy → Decodo rebrand left mixed signals across docs, SDKs, and third-party tutorials

What we think after testing Decodo (formerly Smartproxy)

Editorial review by Maya Cortez · last tested May 31, 2026

Decodo — the Vilnius-based provider that operated as Smartproxy from 2018 until its April 2025 rebrand — has spent the last seven years quietly carving out the middle of the proxy market. Where Bright Data courts Fortune 500 procurement teams and Oxylabs runs KYC checks before issuing keys, Decodo lets a freelancer enter a card, clear a 3-day, 100 MB free trial, and run a residential session in under ten minutes. The pool sits at 125M+ residential IPs across 195+ countries, anchored by 16.1M US, 5.6M German, and 5M UK addresses. That is roughly a sixth of Bright Data's claimed footprint, but it covers the tier-one geographies most non-enterprise scrapers actually touch.

The pricing ladder is the clearest expression of the "self-serve democratizer" positioning. Residential traffic begins at $3.75/GB on the 3 GB plan, slides to $3.00/GB at 50 GB, and bottoms at $2.00/GB on the 1 TB tier — a curve that punishes nobody for staying small. Pay-as-you-go residential at $4/GB with no commitment is rare in this segment; Bright Data's PAYG sits closer to $8.40/GB and Oxylabs requires a $99 minimum just to start. ISP proxies open at $0.27/IP, datacenter at $0.02/IP, and the Site Unblocker bundles unblocking logic at $0.95 per 1,000 requests. The 14-day money-back guarantee (trial users excluded) covers buyer's remorse without the legal back-and-forth larger vendors require.

Where the value proposition strains is at the harder end of the target spectrum. Decodo's success rates on Google SERP and clean US e-commerce land in the high-99s, but Cloudflare-fronted retail and aggressive social platforms expose a thinner managed-unblocking layer than the premium tier offers. Compliance documentation is adequate but not enterprise-grade — there is no published SOC 2 Type II, the KYC process is light-touch, and the team of 130 employees runs a leaner support bench than a 24/7 named-CSM operation. Account managers exist on the higher residential plans, but solo developers stay on chat tickets that typically resolve same-day rather than same-hour.

How to get started with Decodo (formerly Smartproxy)

A 5-minute walkthrough from sign-up to your first successful request. Total setup time: ~10 minutes.

  1. 1

Create an account and claim the free trial without a sales call

Go to dashboard.decodo.com, register with email + card (no company verification, no KYC docs, no scheduled demo), and activate the 3-day / 100 MB residential trial from the Free Trial banner on the dashboard home. The card is required for fraud screening but isn't charged until you pick a paid plan. If you ever held a Smartproxy account, the same credentials log you straight into the Decodo dashboard — the migration was server-side.

  2. 2

Pick a network and provision a proxy user under Residential → Proxy Setup

From the left nav, open Residential → Proxy Setup. Create a sub-user with a username/password pair, then choose endpoint type: gate.decodo.com:7000 for rotating IPs (new IP per request) or gate.decodo.com:10001-10010 for sticky sessions held up to 30 minutes. For city-level or ASN targeting, append parameters to the username: user-USERNAME-country-us-city-newyork-session-abc123. The Endpoint Generator tab builds the string for you if you'd rather click than concatenate.

  3. 3

Wire up the MCP server for Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT agents

Under Integrations → MCP Server, copy the Decodo MCP config block and paste it into your claude_desktop_config.json or Cursor MCP settings. The server exposes scrape, parse, and unblock tools that your LLM can call directly — meaning an agent can request a Cloudflare-protected page and get clean HTML back without you writing a proxy client. For n8n, install the official Decodo node from the community nodes registry; for LangChain, pip install decodo-langchain and pass the proxy session into the standard WebBaseLoader.

  4. 4

Enable the AI Parser or Site Unblocker for hard targets

Plain residential rotation handles ~80% of targets, but Cloudflare, DataDome, and PerimeterX-fronted sites need more. Toggle Site Unblocker under Scraping APIs — it adds JS rendering, fingerprint rotation, and CAPTCHA solving, billed per successful request rather than per GB. For structured extraction, the AI Parser endpoint accepts a URL plus a target schema in plain English ("extract title, price, sku, stock") and returns JSON. Both are billed separately from the residential GB pool, so monitor the Usage Statistics panel.

  5. 5

Set spend caps, sub-users, and rotate keys before scaling

Before pointing production traffic at it, set a hard usage cap under Account → Usage Limits — Decodo will hard-stop traffic at the cap rather than auto-billing overages, which is the opposite of Bright Data's default. Create per-environment sub-users (dev, staging, prod) so a leaked credential only burns one bucket, and rotate the API token under API → Tokens every 90 days. Webhook alerts at 50/80/95% consumption are configurable under Notifications.

FAQ

The questions buyers actually ask.

Is Decodo the same company as Smartproxy, or did something change? +
Same company, same infrastructure, same IP pool — only the brand changed in April 2025. The Lithuania-based team (founded 2018) rebranded from Smartproxy to Decodo to disambiguate from a separate residential reseller using a similar name and to signal the shift toward AI/agent tooling. Existing API endpoints under smartproxy.com still resolve, but new code should point to gate.decodo.com; the dashboard moved fully to dashboard.decodo.com.
What changed when Smartproxy became Decodo — do I need to update my code? +
Practically, no urgent changes — Smartproxy endpoints are still being resolved via DNS aliasing for backwards compatibility, and your old credentials work in the new dashboard. That said, new docs, the MCP server, the AI Parser, and the n8n/LangChain integrations only ship under the Decodo namespace, so migrate at your next refactor. The one gotcha: some Smartproxy SDK packages on PyPI haven't been updated, so prefer the official decodo-python client going forward.
Can I really skip the sales call and get a residential IP in 60 seconds? +
Yes — that's the entire pitch versus Bright Data and Oxylabs, where anything above a $500/month residential plan typically requires a KYC call and a compliance review. With Decodo you enter a card, the trial activates instantly, and the first rotating IP is reachable within roughly a minute. The tradeoff: there's no dedicated account manager assigned until you hit enterprise volume (~$5K/month), so onboarding help comes from chat support, not a CSM.
How does Decodo pricing actually compare to Bright Data, Oxylabs, Webshare, and NodeMaven? +
On residential GB rates, Decodo sits in the cheaper half of the premium tier: $3.75/GB at 3 GB and $2.00/GB at 1 TB, versus Bright Data ($8.40 PAYG, $4.20/GB at scale), Oxylabs ($8 PAYG, ~$4/GB at scale), and NodeMaven ($3.50/GB at scale, but with a smaller 30M+ pool). Webshare is cheaper on datacenter and static residential but its rotating residential pool is smaller and dirtier. For raw residential volume per dollar, Decodo and NodeMaven are the value picks; Bright Data wins only on unblocker quality.
How well does Decodo handle Cloudflare, DataDome, and other anti-bot stacks? +
Plain residential rotation passes vanilla Cloudflare and most DataDome deployments at the published 99.95% success rate, but on aggressive Cloudflare Turnstile or PerimeterX-fronted targets (Ticketmaster-class), block rates climb noticeably higher than Bright Data's Web Unblocker or NodeMaven's premium pool. The Decodo Site Unblocker scraping API closes most of that gap with JS rendering and fingerprint rotation — expect 92-95% on hard targets at roughly $2 per 1K requests, billed separately from the GB pool.
What's the actual story on the MCP server and AI Parser — is it a real product or marketing? +
Both shipped in 2025 and are in production. The MCP server is a Model Context Protocol implementation that plugs directly into Claude Desktop, Cursor, and any MCP-compatible client, exposing scrape/parse/unblock tools that the LLM can invoke without proxy boilerplate. The AI Parser accepts a URL plus a natural-language schema and returns structured JSON — useful for one-off extractions where you don't want to write selectors. Pricing is per-request, not per-GB, and both work alongside the n8n and LangChain integrations.
Is the 100 MB / 3-day free trial enough to actually evaluate Decodo? +
It's tight. 100 MB is enough to validate that the proxy works, run a few hundred page loads on a target, and check geographic accuracy — but not enough to benchmark sustained success rates on a real scraping job. NodeMaven's 2 GB trial and Bright Data's 7-day trial give more room. If you need more, the 14-day money-back guarantee on any paid plan effectively functions as an extended trial — buy the 3 GB plan for $25, run your benchmark, refund if it doesn't perform.
Does Decodo have SOC 2, ISO 27001, or any compliance certifications for enterprise procurement? +
Not yet — and this is the honest blocker for regulated buyers. As of late 2026, Decodo does not hold SOC 2 Type II or ISO 27001, though GDPR compliance and a documented KYC/ethics policy for the residential supply chain are published. For enterprise procurement against finance, healthcare, or government targets, Bright Data (SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001) and Oxylabs (ISO 27001, ISO 27701) clear vendor security review more easily. Decodo's compliance roadmap lists SOC 2 as in-progress but with no committed date.
